Sparkes Home Sri Lanka (reg charity 1128189)

The Sparkes Home Sri Lanka houses 40 girls and is situated in the village of Kallar, south of Batticaloa, Pamal area, on the east coast of Sri Lanka. The girls are aged from 6 years upwards and are either victims of the 2004 tsunami, victims of the recent civil war or from families who are so poor they cannot afford to keep their children. The home is run by the Methodist church which donated the land to build the home in 2005 and money was raised by the Sparkes family and their friends. The home is one of many administered by the Methodist church but it welcomes all denominations.

The girls are looked after by two house mothers, a cook and a watchman/ caretaker and the day to day running is overseen by the local Methodist minister and his committee of three women and two men in the village. The girls all attend the local school which is within walking distance. Once they have completed their education it is our ambition to make sure they have the means to earn their own living before they leave the home. In the home we provide extra English tuition and have provided some computers and sewing machines. We are currently planning a scholarship fund for university education.

The home is fully dependent on our funds. It costs £1 a day to support each child.
